Review: Lume Cannabis Co. - Jenny Kush
By Gas & Middies
Today we are reviewing possibly the most (over?)hyped strain in Michigan.
- Named after a cannabis activist, who died tragically.
- Grown by (supposedly) the largest Single State Operator in the nation.
- With THC percentages in the 30-40% range.
This strain either raises eyebrows or rolls eyes:
Jenny Kush grown by Lume Cannabis Co.
Purchased at Lume Cannabis Co. for $26.
Lume Cannabis Co.
Lume Cannabis Co. is based out of Troy, Michigan.

These guys have $$$:
- With sales as high as $135 million a month (most likely $1 billion a year)!
- The company raised about $9 million dollars in funding according to Crunchbase.
- But also private investors poured $70 million into their indoor grow facility.
Controversially, the family that owns Belle Tire has a significant stake in the company.
Currently they have 40 stores across the state and more to come.
Lume’s grow consists of:
- 250,000 sq/ft indoor facility in Evart, Michigan.
- 33 acres of outdoor space in Prescott, Michigan.

- They start grows hydroponically.
- They use LED lights.

Lume Data
One cool thing about Lume, is they tend to post a lot of data.
Lume revelated their Top Strains in Michigan - Cannabis Trends 2022.
Including their best sellers:
As well as their most potent (highest THC %):
We see our girl, Jenny Kush took 1st place on both lists.
An interesting note: the 2nd most potent & best seller Blueberry Crumble, has the same genetics as Jenny Kush (Amnesia Haze x Rare Darkness), just a different mix.
Jennifer “Jenny Kush” Monson
Jenny Kush is named posthumorously after a real person: Jennifer Monson.
Lansing City Pulse wrote a great article on her legacy:
Monson, who went by the name “Jenny Kush,” was a renowned cannabis activist from North Dakota who moved to Colorado in 2010 and was killed by a drunk driver in 2013. She was a founding member of Moms for Marijuana and helped to start its first chapter in Colorado.
She also reportedly worked as an organizer for Mile High NORML and numerous other groups, in addition to being a frequent fixture at monthly cannabis rallies at the State Capitol and for her “SexPot Radio” podcast that blended together topics like sex, cannabis and politics.
Monson’s car was struck by a drunk driver on the way home from a concert. She left behind a loving partner and four children. Friends remembered her as a gregarious, ornery pistol of a woman with a heart of gold, according to reports in Westword. She was also known as a maternal type with a foul mouth, a somewhat dirty sense of humor and rainbow-colored hair.
“And among Colorado’s cannabis activists, she quickly became known as the girl who got shit done. This wasn’t a hostile takeover, though; it was a labor of love,” William Breaths wrote for Westword, noting that Monson also sat in front of cop cars during the Occupy Denver event.
Monson has since been memorialized at major league cannabis events like the High Times Seattle Cannabis Cup and the Boston Freedom Rally. The latest tribute: The highest-testing marijuana available in Michigan is named her honor and on sale now at Lume Cannabis Co.
There is also a day dedicated to her on August 31st: Jenny Kush Day.
Lume typically celebrates with activites, giveaways, & an elusive discount on Jenny Kush at their stores.
Jenny Kush
A true, feel-good hybrid named after the late cannabis activist Jenny Monson. Earthy florals blossom in the inhale as sharp, sweet citrus notes grace the exhale. The uplifting effect is potent and soothing, leaving your body at ease and your spirits high.
With all this, and a high yield average going for it to keep prices down, It’s no wonder Jenny is regarded as one of the best Michigan cannabis strains.
As you can see, we have a clear favorite in the house. Jenny Kush takes the cake as the top selling strain at Lume, and it’s also a top performer at many other dispensaries across Michigan, and the country.
Of course, no one grows Jenny like we do, so people who love this strain tend to shop with us when they want the absolute best from this strain. Our recent Jenny Kush batches have been testing at 33%+ THC content.
We’ve even recently had a few batches of Jenny test at 40%+ THC! We’ve dubbed these batches “Super Jenny.” Yet another reason why this is one of the most popular strains in Michigan.

Super Jenny Kush
If the high testing 30% Jenny Kush wasn’t enough, Lume outdid themselves with Super Jenny Kush:
A batch of Jenny Kush as ambitious as Jenny Monson herself. With THC levels clocking in at 40.38%, it’s a chart-topping hybrid that’ll lift your spirits to the stratosphere. A body buzz keeps you grounded amongst aromas of fresh florals and sweet citrus. Soothing, joyful, and super, super dank. - Lume
Makes me think of Super Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze.
I didn’t get to review Super Jenny Kush, but it’s crazy to know it exists.
Biological Limits of THC %
THC percentages around 30% should have your Spidey-Sense tingling.
Just a few years ago, 20% THC seemed to be the goal many companies strived for.
According to the study: The frequency distribution of reported THC concentrations of legal cannabis flower products increases discontinuously around the 20% THC threshold in Nevada and Washington state in 2021:
There is a statistically unusual spike in the frequency of products reporting just higher than 20% THC in both states consistent with economic incentives for products to contain at least 20% THC. This “bunching” of reported THC levels exists among some, but not all, cannabis testing labs, suggesting that laboratory differences (rather than precise manipulation by growers) drive this potential manipulation in reported THC content.
This study samples Nevada and Washington state, but the findings seem to apply here as well.
There is also a biological limit of THC that a plant can produce:
The biological limits on THC production mean that ~35% total THC by dry weight is a rough upper limit for strains. On average, high-THC strains contain ~18-20% total THC, while the more potent strains will contain ~25-30% total THC. You should almost never see a strain with more than 35% total THC by dry weight. Be skeptical if you do. - Leafly - Peak THC: The Limits on THC and CBD Levels for Cannabis Strains
Which makes sense, cannabis flower can’t be 100% THC, it must contain other things:
If the flower you buy is labelled as having 25% THC by dry weight, it means that 25% of the mass of the flower, after it has been dried to remove water, comes from THC. That means 75% of its dry weight comes from other things: fats, carbs, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. All that stuff. More THC or CBD means less of those things, which the plant depends on for survival. - Leafly - Peak THC: The Limits on THC and CBD Levels for Cannabis Strains
If you see anything above 35%, it’s almost always a lab error.
We know from the above study, labs are incentivized to produce higher & higher THC percentages.
We also know that the THC percentage on a label can vary by as much as 10%.
There is a lot of room for error here along with misaligned incentives.
The current strain with the highest THC percentage on record is the rightfuly dubbed Godfather OG ranging between 30-35%.
If Jenny Kush legimatately tested at these levels (especially Super Jenny Kush), she would easily dethrone the current champ.
But that hasn’t happened…

I’ve heard the analogy of chasing THC, like going to a liquor store and buying based on the highest alcohol content. Everyone would buy Everclear.
Jenny Kush is the Everclear of cannabis.
You buy it when you are young, inexperienced, and just trying to get drunk. But as you mature, you seek a yummy bourbon or scotch, prefering taste over potency.
To boot, I didn’t feel the 30%+ THC that was advertised. 🤷
This proves that THC % isn’t everything. This is:
Middies 🥱
Outro
I found more data for Jenny Kush than any other strain, I’ve researched.
The data, the backstory, and the THC percentage, all led to a lackluster product.
The problem with hype is that is raises expectations.
If the product doesn’t live up to the hype, you’re left with disapointment.
My guess is anyone that has looked past the marketing and legend behind this strain, is left disappointed.
What’s everyone’s opinion on Jenny Kush?
Anyone tried the Super Jenny Kush?
