Review (x2): Hytek - Fake Promises (Gelonade) & Growing Pains - Tell Me Lies (Devils Candy)
By Gas & Middies
Today, we’re reviewing a special collaboration between Hytek & Growing Pains that dropped on Valentine’s Day.
They released their special edition: Broken Hearts boxes, containing Fake Friends & Tell me Lies eighths.
Purchased at King of Budz - Ferndale for $100 (for the box) or $25/eighth.
Broken Hearts Box
Two of my favorite Michigan brands got together to drop something special for Valentine’s Day.
They dubbed it: Broken Hearts.
Inside this limited edition box contained:
- 1x Hytek - Fake Promises eighth
- 1x Growing Pains - Tell Me Lies eighth
- 1x High On Love chocolate bar edible
- 1x Love Bites gummy edibles
I’m obviously late to the party reviewing this, but still wanted to get it out to you guys.
Mostly for one reason:
Both of these strains are readily available from Hytek and Growing Pains under different names…
- Fake Promises = Hytek - Gelonade
- Tell Me Lies = Growing Pains - Devils Candy
One interesting note is that Hytek ALSO grows Devils Candy AND Growing Pains ALSO grows Gelonade (though they call it Citronade)
Now that the secret is out, let’s get to the reviews!

Gassy citrus! ⛽ 🍊
We all know Gelonade. And this is one of the better renditions on the Michigan market.
The citrus is heavy, dank, and gassy.
Flavor stays with you from start to finish.
It hits you hard.
Compared to Super Dope’s Lemon Popperz, this is much more dry and dank.
But for the price, I’d take 2x of these anyday.
Add Gelonade to the list of mainstream strains that Hytek can grow well. Because this is citrus:

Growing Pains - Tell Me Lies (Devils Candy)
- Flavor: Raspberry, Candy, Melon
- Cross: Devil Driver x Runtz
Devil Candy, Our selection of Bullpup by Clearwater Seeds, hunted from 48 seeds, is a blend of Devil Driver and Runtz. This unique fusion introduces a delightful raspberry twist to the beloved Runtz strain, resulting in an irresistible flavor reminiscent of raspberry hard candy. Those who appreciate Runtz will find the familiar potent and intense effects seamlessly carried over, making this strain ideal for nighttime. Kiefy berries! 🫐
I’ll be honest, I haven’t been a big fan of Devil Driver crosses…
But this one hit different!
You get the expected berries, but there is a chemical funk that comes with it.
That funk, is what tips this from great flower, into something special.
As expected with Growing Pains, this one comes heavy with terps.
The flavor is mouth-coating and lasts your whole smoking section.
Sparkling with trichomes, this bud smells and tastes hashy.
I’d say a great grower is able to take a strain you haven’t liked in the past, and redefine that strain for you.
Growing Pains made me appreciate Devil Driver, because this is:

Outro
This was a dope collaboration between two trailblazing growers in the Michigan market.
They showed out on Valentine’s Day with something fun and festive for the holiday.
I’d love to see more brands do stuff like this in the future.
Anyone else get a Broken Hearts box? Did you prefer the Fake Promises or Tell Me Lies?
What do you guys think?
