Review (x3): Pro Gro x Deep East x Wizard Trees - RS11, RS54, & Zoap
By Gas & Middies
Today we review three strains from a collaboration between Pro Gro and two West Coast heavyweights: Deep East & Wizard Trees.
The strains:
- RS11
- RS54
- Zoap
Purchased from King of Budz for $30 each.
Pro Gro
Pro Gro is the grow operation for Pure Options, based in East Lansing.
They grow Cannabis Cup winning flower and are known for their strains: Lunar Lemon & Moonbow #112.
Pro Gro is not shy about collaborations. They frequently collaborate with Element to produce concentrates. They recently collaborated with Skunk House Genetics as well.
Deep East
DEO Farms, also known as Deep East is a cannabis breeder from Oakland, California whos real name is Rob.
Famous for hunting the Rainbow Sherbet strain, also known as RS.
I’ve included excerpts from an interview with Deep East from LA Weekly.
On his rise to fame:
“That’s really how I got popular on Instagram was doing pheno hunts,” he said.
On the creation of the Rainbow Sherb line:
“I basically F2’ed the OZ Kush. And that’s what I called the Pink Guava. I was running the Pink Guava for a while. And then I crossed that to the Sunset Sherbert, and that’s where the whole RS line was born,” he said.
The RS came from an open pollination of six strains. But it was the winner of the pack because Sunset Sherbert was the team’s favorite smoke at the moment.
On how RS11 & RS54 were selected:
“I popped around 120 of those Rainbow Sherbert seeds and I kept four phenos,” DEO explains. “Wizard Trees has the exact same seeds from that original seed stock. He found the #54 and #11 that he kept.
On the creation of Zoap:
To get their newest hit Zoap, DEO didn’t need another 100 seed pheno hunt. The Zoap was the #21 pheno out of the Rainbow Sherbert #16 F2 line.
“The ZOAP was the female I used to take the RS to F3. So you can see I kind of shaped the line I wanted to go,” he said before noting the RS F3 line is currently kept strictly in-house. With the RS F3, the goal was to keep the flavor perfect while increasing the growth vigor during veg.
Wizard Trees
Wizard Trees is a cannabis grower from Los Angeles, whos real name is Scott.
I’ve included some excerpts from a High Times article about Wizard Trees:
On the brand:
The brainchild of Scott, a true Los Angeles local who has been cultivating high-grade cannabis for around eight years, Wizard Trees is the product of trial and error and putting in the work. While most brands today are focused on volume and scale, for Scott, the bar to wear his logo is constantly elevating. If it’s not beautiful, if it’s not terpy, it’s just not Wizard Trees.
On the collaboration with DEO Farms/Deep East:
Although Wizard Trees is its own brand, Scott is quick to point out the other players that helped him get to where he is today, and that collaboration has elevated his game to levels he didn’t know he could reach. Most notably, he attributes a lot of his success to Deep East, the person behind DEO Farms, who breeds most of the genetics Wizard Trees grows.
“Rob [Deep East] was working with my partner at the time, and there was a falling out between the partners, and I received all of Rob’s genetics,” Scott said. “He had given my partner all these seeds, the Rainbow Sherbet seeds. We popped 100 seeds, and we found the RS #3, our RS-11, and the RS #54, which is Studio 54.”
After Scott connected with Rob directly, it was clear the two were on the same page. Seemingly kismet, Scott pitched an idea to Rob.
“Let’s build something together and just keep working on this.”

👁️ Look

👃 Smell
- Sweet, candy.
👅 Taste
- Faint candy.
- Taste fades.
Rating
For the strain that started the Rainbow Sherbet hotness, this was underwhelming.
It looked pretty nice and smelled great, but that just didn’t translate over to taste.
The little taste there was, faded over time.
Not a good start, this was:

This brought some welcome gas to the RS mix, however little else.
Not the prettiest nug, I was hoping the petro smell delivered in taste.
… but it didn’t.
The taste once again faded quickly.
And once again:

Looks like we saved the best for last!
This is by far the prettiest nug, with the strongest nose.
It also had the best taste of the bunch.
However, that taste faded quickly like the others before it.
Even though Zoap was by far the best strain this release had to offer, it was still:
Middies 🥱
Outro
This is a lover letter to disappointment.
Reading all the hype about what Rainbow Sherbet and it’s various phenos did out in the West Coast, had me amped for this drop.
But all that hype means nothing if the end product isn’t exceptional.
It also goes to show, even with tried and true genetics, that doesn’t guarantee success in this market.
I know Pro Gro can produce great flower. Their Lunar Lemon, Moonbow, Sherb Cream Pie, & Apple Tart are mainstays in my stash, at an affordable price of $15-25.
But I have not been impressed by any of their flower collaborations thus far.
It just doesn’t seem to be worth the markup compared to their standard fare.
What do you guys think?
